There are many things that make a Flemish Giant
different from other breeds of rabbits. Things
many wouldn't think about. The obvious is their
size. Yes, like all rabbits the Flemish Giant
loves a quiet hiding place. Because of their
massive size this hiding place is not behind the
refrigerator, or stove. It is not the the back
of a closet you now have to clean just to get
your rabbit out before he chews up all your good
stuff you have tucked away fro safe keeping. He
is easily located, most likely under your feet.
The Flemish Giant is less likely to chew then
other breeds. To date my son and I have had no
issues with chewing nor have we had to put
pepper spray, soap or other special needs items
on our furniture, base boards, wires, and so on.
The rabbits have learned the word NO, and
respond to it. The first few days your rabbit is
home a cheap squirt gun is a very handy tool.
Watch the head shots as you don't want water in
their ears.
The Flemish Giant rabbit is very social. They
will try very hard to make friends with other
animals and people in your home. This does not
mean the family dog will appreciate a huge
rabbit sleeping by, or on them. It does mean the
rabbit will never give up trying to make the dog
its best friend. Cats are natural hunters of
rabbits. Be advised that a cat may not be the
best companion for your house rabbit. I
personally will not sell a rabbit to anyone that
has a cat.
The Flemish Giant fits easily into most harness
made for a small to medium sized dog. Bucky has
an 11" neck, with a 17" girth. Cat harness are
to small for most Flemish Giant rabbits. They
learn to walk on a leash easily. A rabbit has a
start and stop mentality however and will go and
stop... go and stop... even if going in the
right direction you may be taking your time due
to the stops, and of course naps along the way.
Because of the massive size of the Flemish, you
are sure to meet allot of new friends along your
walk. Everyone wants to see, and pet this giant
bunny rabbit you have out for a walk.
You may be thinking that this giant rabbit will
eat you out of house and home.
The average Flemish giant rabbit on a good feed
will eat about 2 cups of quality rabbit feed per
day. Rabbit feed is sold in 50lb bags ( the good
stuff anyway) that costs about 16.00 for 50lbs.
That means your rabbit will cost you about 16.00
every 4 months for basic food needs.
He will also need something that is his to chew
on. I suggest fruit wood other than cherry due
to the strychnine content. Anything that doesn't
splinter is fine. He will also need iodized
salt, and mineral if you are not feeding a high
quality feed that has mineral in it. Giant
rabbits do differ in that they need length..
rabbits chew a cud and the Flemish Giant needs
long grass or hay to nibble on to keep his
digestive system in order. Lettuce, and other
treats may have a high water content and will
kill your rabbit. Lettuce is a huge No No in my
home. Toast, cereal, limited carrots, potatoes
and other vegetables are fine as a treat, but
are by no means enough to keep these huge
rabbits going.
